Japan’s CIPA, a group of Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Ricoh, Sony and other photographic equipment companies, released statistics related to digital camera and interchangeable lens sales last December. Thus, the statistics for the year as a whole became known.

As can be seen from the charts, sales have significantly decreased compared to November, naturally being lower in annual terms.

In December, 845,621 digital cameras were sold. This is 19.6% less in annual terms. In total, in 2020, 8,886,292 digital cameras were sold, which is 41.6% less than in 2019. However, in monetary terms, the market shrank by only 28.4%.

Interchangeable lens cameras sold 518,278 in December. This is 19.1% less than in December 2019. In total, 5,307,649 cameras with interchangeable lenses were sold during the year. This is 37.3% less than in 2019. In monetary terms, sales decreased by 24.8%. 2 374 569 SLR cameras were sold, which is 47.3% less than in 2019. Mirrorless cameras were sold 2,933,080 units, or 25.9% less than in 2019.

There were 327 343 compact cameras sold in December, down 20.4% year on year. In total, 3,578,643 such cameras were sold in 2020, which is 47% less than in 2019. In monetary terms, sales decreased by 41.3%.

Finally, 9,024,460 interchangeable lenses were sold in a year. This is 36.6% less than in 2019. In monetary terms, sales decreased by 31.0%.
