In order to restart its accession negotiations Turkey with the European Unionthe country should record progress towards democratization, as the Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement stated today from Ankara, Oliver Varchelli. “Accession negotiations are currently inactive. In order for them to restart, there are very clear criteria that must be established (which include) democracy and the rule of law,” Hungarian Commissioner Várhely said during a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. “We discussed areas in which we can move forward”, said the European official, estimating that the partnership relations between Ankara and the EU have “huge potential” according to APE-MPE.
For his part, the Turkish Foreign Minister accused Brussels of putting “political” obstacles in the accession negotiations. “We expect the EU to show the necessary will to improve relations and act with more courage,” Fidan stressed.
Before his session NATO in July, the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave the green light for Sweden’s NATO membership on the condition of resuming accession negotiations in the EU, most of whose member states are members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Turkey, still officially candidate country for accession, applied in 1987 to join the European Economic Community and in 1999 to join the European Union, but accession negotiations that began in 2005 have been frozen for years. Ankara-Brussels relations deteriorated after the failed coup attempt in July 2016 in Turkey and the mass purges against opponents and journalists that followed.
