The European Union is committed to the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. To support all sectors in achieving this goal, the Commission is calling on companies from all over Europe to join the commitment to sustainable consumption.
This initiative calls on non-food businesses (including retailers) of various sizes and sectors to make specific commitments to reduce their overall environmental footprint, produce more sustainable products and redouble their efforts to raise awareness consumers about the effects of their consumption choices. This action is a voluntary commitment that businesses can make and that goes beyond EU legislative requirements.
A total of 11 companies are already participating in the pilot phase of the initiative: H&M Group, Philips, L’Oréal, Engie, LEGO Group, Renewd, CECONOMY, Erste Group, Decathlon, Colruyt Group and VÄ—jo projektai. These companies joined the initiative in 2021 and will publish annually their progress towards meeting their commitments.
The Commission is now inviting more companies to join the initiative.
Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders said: “I look forward to welcoming many more companies of various sizes and sectors to this initiative so that we can further strengthen sustainable consumption in the EU. Our aim is to have all companies on our side in the green transition. By participating in the initiative, companies are sending a strong message to consumers that they are deeply committed to supporting sustainable transition and leading the way in their industry.”
