The European Commission reiterated today its firm position that Putin’s decree on payments in rubles for Russian gas is a violation of European sanctions against Russia.

Asked to comment on the statement by the Italian Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, that the payment of Russian gas in rubles is not a violation of sanctions, the European Commission’s response was “we do not comment on statements”.

According to Commissioner for Energy Tim McPherson, “the Commission’s position on the Russian decree and the proposed payment mechanism remains the same. The Central Bank of Russia has been sanctioned and the use of the proposed method “The Kremlin, as has been pointed out many times, is a violation of sanctions.”

This has been made clear by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Energy Commissioner Kadri Simpson, said Tim McPherson, noting that the Commission, in co-operation with the Council’s legal service and in constant contact with Member States, will present detailed guidelines on how to pay for gas.

The same spokesman also said that the Commission was considering additional details on the implementation of the decree sent by Gazprom in a letter to its customers.
