US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, on his second trip to Israel in a month, has a one-on-one meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the headquarters of the Israeli armed forces in Tel Aviv and will be followed by a wider meeting, according to a statement from Israeli Prime Minister’s Office.
The aim of the visit is, according to Washington, to press for humanitarian pauses in the war in the Gaza Strip, at a time when israeli forces have surrounded gaza city which is under continuous bombardment.
According to the White House, these pauses must be temporally and locally limited, as Washington rejects calls from Arab and other countries to implement a ceasefire in the Israel’s war against Hamas which is in its 28th day.
However, the agenda of this visit by the head of American diplomacy appears more complex, as the escalation of the war and the loss of civilians along with the humanitarian disaster that accompanies it increases public anger and affects domestic and international interests of the United States.
Anthony Blinken is expected to push for more foreigners to leave the Gaza Strip, increase humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave and stress the importance of protecting civilians. It will also pressure Israel to control Jewish settler violence against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip
New on the agenda for Anthony Blinken’s talks in Israel will be the need for Israel to define what the post-war situation will be in the Gaza Stripwho will take over the governance, how there will be security guarantees and what will be the path to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, as reported by Reuters, citing information from the Times of Israel, and relayed by the Athens Agency.
In a speech to Congress on Tuesday, Anthony Blinken talked about the possibility of strengthening the role of the Palestinian Authority, as well as the possibility that Arab countries and international organizations will be called upon to play some role in the post-war reality of Gaza.
According to State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, Blinken will speak about “the US commitment to work with its partners on the terms of a lasting and sustainable peace in the Middle East, which will include the establishment of a Palestinian state that meets the expectations of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank”.
Anthony Blinken will meet in Amman tomorrow with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, who says in a statement that Israel must end the war in Gaza, where it is committing war crimes by shelling civilians and imposing a siege.
