The confinement of the United Kingdom and Germany frustrates the tourist corridors in the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands see their last attempt to save part of their peak tourism season, which has just begun, disappear. Just a week after the United Kingdom and Germany decided to include the archipelago in the list of safe destinations, the governments of both countries have decreed a new confinement of their populations try to stop the second wave of the pandemic.

This means that neither Germans nor British will be able to come to the islands for tourism, since, although this new lockdown is less strict than the one in spring, they can only leave their homes for essential activities. Actually in Europe there is no border closure, but, de facto, the running of the bulls make it impossible to go on a trip or vacation, it is only allowed to leave with a just cause.

The Canary Islands are losing their last hope not to lose their peak season. The United Kingdom and Germany are the main source markets for tourists in the archipelago. One in two travelers who visited the islands last year was British, which gives an idea of the negative impact this new restriction has on tourism in the area.

Chain closures

In Germany, Angela Merkel decreed a new confinement of the population last Wednesday. In France, Emmanuel Macron did the same that same day. The closure will last at least until December 1, depending on how the situation evolves.

In the United Kingdom, the second lockdown announced yesterday by Boris Johnson will begin next Thursday and it will last at least until December 2. Portugal, Belgium and part of Greece have also closed. They are markets with less presence on the islands.

London included the Canary Islands as a safe destination a week ago, hours after Berlin did the same. This implies that, since last weekend, citizens who return from the archipelago to one of the two countries they no longer have to quarantine, although it does take a test before flying. Last weekend, after the announcement, reservations and travel searches to the islands had multiplied by five.

Canary Islands it is the only Spanish destination included in the safe area of the EU travel map. This cartography indicates the risk of contagion by regions (not by countries) throughout the continent. High-risk areas would be in red, medium-risk areas in yellow, and low-risk areas in green. The EU decided to create this map to facilitate mobility, but currently almost all of Europe is in the red zone.
