The Constitutional Court of North Macedonia found the law of ethnic quotas for the State unconstitutional

The Constitutional Court of North Macedonia ruled, yesterday, unconstitutional the law of ethnic quotas for appointments in the State, based on the national origin of the citizens. This law, which the country’s Constitutional Court ruled unconstitutional, provides that appointments to the Court are made on the basis of ethnic quotas, i.e. according to the percentage of the seven ethnicities that reside and are mentioned in the country’s Constitution (“Macedonian”, “Albanian” , “Turkish”, “Serbian”, “Bosnian”, “Vlach”, “Roma”). This law has been applied since 2001, on the basis of the Ohrid peace agreement, which put an end to the months-long conflicts that had broken out at the time between Albanian rebels of the KLA and the government forces of the country and strengthened the rights of the Albanians who make up 25% of the population of North Macedonia. The “spirit” of this law was mainly to increase the percentage of Albanians in the State, which until 2001 was very small and caused the strong protests of the Albanian element of the country.
