The consumer’s feeling index of the University of Michigan falls while the fears of inflation increase

According to the feeling of the consumer of the University of Michigan (UOM), American consumers are beginning to worry more and more about the US president’s approach, Donald Trump, towards economic policy and international trade. The fears of a commercial war have affected consumer confidence, and consumer inflation expectations have also increased.

The UOM preliminary feeling index showed that the aggregate consumer perspective contracted in January, falling to 67.8 compared to the medium forecasts of investors of an increase to 71.8 from December 71.1. It is the lowest reading in the main index of the UOM feeling since July of last year, and the average consumer of the USA may not be in such a good way or feel as confident as Wall Street could have originally thought.

The UOM consumer inflation expectations also increased in all areas, rising to 3.3% in the next 5 years and jumping to 4.3% in the next 12 months, since multiple rounds of tariff threats affect the economy at the level of the consumer.
