The 27 leaders of the EU member countries they agreed on a series emergency interventions to deal with the energy crisis yesterday in Brussels. But Hungary managed to opt out as, according to its prime minister, any future cap the EU places on gas prices will not apply to long-term gas supply agreements, such as the 15-year deal Hungary has with Russia’s Gazprom.
The Prime Minister Viktor Orban he said on Facebook that “we got an exemption from the gas price ceiling so that it would not jeopardize the security of Hungary’s gas supplies.” He also stated that, even if there is a common gas supply in Europe, “this will not be mandatory for Hungary”.
What is included in the final agreement?
European leaders agreed to:
- Common supplies natural gas to replenish stocks and ensure security of supply across Europe
- Temporary measures affecting the purchase price of natural gas
- Solidarity arrangements between Member States in the event of gas supply disruption
- Reducing energy consumption
Thus, the political mandate was given by the “27” for the details to be finalized at the level of energy ministers.
