The coup plotters have reopened Niger’s airspace

His military leaders Niger reopened the country’s airspace to all commercial flights which they closed on August 6, after seizing power in a coup d’étatsaid a representative of the Ministry of Transport today.

The closure of the airspace had forced Air France and other European carriers to suspend some flights and make longer routes on the African continent. Landlocked Niger is twice the size of France, and many flight routes to Africa routinely pass over the country.

The junta initially closed Niger’s airspace citing a threat of military intervention from the West African regional body, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He did not give a reason for lifting the ban at this time.
