The Federal Court authorized the return of asphalting and restoration works on BR-319, a land connection between the cities of Manaus (AM) and Porto Velho (RO).
The decision was taken by judge Flávio Jaime de Moraes Jardim, from the Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region, this Monday (7).
In the appeal against the suspension, the Union, Ibama and other bodies guarantee that the environmental studies were properly conducted and that the paving of the highway would facilitate the government’s access to monitoring illegal activities.
In the decision, it was highlighted that the work is of great importance so that the population of the region is not isolated and that the impact is not resolved by suspension but by continuity without necessary structural measures.
In July, an injunction issued by the Federal Court of Amazonas suspended the prior license for the highway requalification works. The action was filed by the Climate Observatory.
The main reason addressed was the environmental impact due to increased deforestation and environmental degradation facilitated by the road, such as land grabbing, illegal logging and transformation of forests into pasture.
