According to a posting on the Sandbox blog, on February 26, it became known that a third party had gained unauthorized access to the computer of one of the company’s employees. Sandbox specialists clarified that the hackers failed to gain access to other services and accounts. Financial losses have not yet been reported.
A number of email addresses from the Sandbox customer base became available to the attackers, to which messages were then sent on behalf of the company. In particular, an email with the subject “The Sandbox Game (PURELAND) Access” went viral, containing hyperlinks to malware that could be used by hackers to gain access to personal information and confidential user data.
Security experts locked out a compromised Sandbox employee account, formatted his laptop memory, and reset all associated passwords. The Sandbox team continues to monitor the situation.
Sandbox alerted users who may have received the scam email. Other users were warned by the company not to open suspicious links or download anything from the hyperlinked website. It is also recommended to change passwords and implement two-factor authentication.
Last year, cryptocurrency exchange Binance also warned customers about phishing emails in its name, urging users to be careful.
