«The Crown 5»: shooting begins. Here’s what you need to know

The set is so armored that the few rumors that arrive seem to come from a distant galaxy, as if we were in the orbits of Star Wars instead of the stuccoed courtyards of Buckingham Palace. It remains that the fifth season of The Crown, the one that will see the last (and definitive) change of the cast and that will accompany the spectators for two new cycles of episodes, is currently in production and will most likely see the light on Netflix in the last months of 2022. Filming has begun at Elstree Studios in north London, but it seems that creator Peter Morgan and casting director Robert Sterne are having a hard time finding the right actors to play some incoming characters.

The protagonists, on the other hand, are all confirmed: Imelda Staunton will take over from Olivia Colman in the role of Queen Elizabeth II; Jonathan Pryce will take over from Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip; Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor will hand over the legacy of Lady Diana and Prince Charles to Elizabeth Debicki and Domic West, while Lesley Manville will be the new Princess Margaret after Helena Bonham Carter. Among the new entries, however, we will see Jonny Lee Miller in the role of Prime Minister John Major, while the search for who will impersonate the Prince Andrew, who in the fourth season had been played by the young Tom Byrne. According to the British media, finding an actor willing to accept the role, especially after the news of the prince’s involvement in Jeffrey Epstein’s (shady) affairs, seems like no small feat. Same goes for the principe Harry that, in the narrative arc foreseen by the new episodes of The Crown, will be aged between 6 and 13: finding an actor with red hair and light eyes is proving to be more difficult than expected, but the casting director has made it clear that, beyond the time limit, he will designate the role to a light-skinned, blue-eyed boy who dyed his hair and eyebrows red.

As for the events narrated, we know for sure that the fifth season of The Crown will face the tumultuous decade of the nineties, marked by the divorce of Charles and Diana, the shock interview granted to the BBC on which there has been so much talk in the last month for alleged wrongdoing by the journalist Martin Bashir who brought home the scoop, and, of course, the disappearance of the sad princess, already the subject of the film The Queen di Stephen Frears. Space, however, also to the fire of the Windsor Castle in 1992, the key role of Camilla Parker Bowles in the life of Charles, the alleged liasons of Diana and so on and so forth. “I loved The Crown right away, ”said Staunton, ready to take on the role of Elizabeth. “As an actress it was a real joy to see Claire Foy, first, and Olivia Colman, then, bring something unique and special to Peter Morgan’s script. I am sincerely honored to be part of this extraordinary creative team, and to accompany The Crown to its conclusion “. The wait is long, and the subjects are hungry.
