A picture is truly worth a thousand words. In a new episode of Still Watching, i co-hosts Hillary Busis, Richard Lawson And Chris Murphy analyze the second episode of the sixth part of The Crown, «Two photographs», with the journalist from VF and expert on royalty Erin Vanderhoof.
As a true Anglophile, in the second episode of the sixth season of The Crownwhich focuses on photographs taken of Diana and Carlo from two very different photographers, Vanderhoof distinguishes reality from fiction. One choice that really surprised her was the insinuation that Mohamed Al-Fayed (Salim Daw) has reached an agreement with the famous paparazzo Mario Brenna to take the iconic photo of Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and Dodi Fayed (Khalid Abdalla) hugging on the yacht, one of the images that drove the tabloids crazy.
“There’s a lot of discussion about who convinced Mario Brenna to do it,” says Vanderhoof, before sharing the theory of the former editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair and author of The Diana Chronicles Tina Brown, that it was Diana herself who called Brenna to get the shot. «She wanted to make her ex-boyfriend jealous, Hasnat Khan”, says Vanderhoof. «There is much debate as to whether it was someone close to Dodi or Diana. It’s one of those things that can’t be definitively proven.”
Vanderhoof also told what happened to Mohamed Al-Fayed in the years following the deaths of Dodi and Diana: “We know from real life that the death of his son destroyed him,” says Vanderhoof. «His life began to revolve around this tragic event. He has become the biggest supporter of all conspiracy theories. He was desperate.” The journalist also shed light on the relationship between the royals and their photographers, recounting her first-hand experience following the Prince William on a boat reserved for the press.
“When filming on the boat, the orientation relative to William changed and all the photographers had to run the other way,” Vanderhoof said. «Everyone had to do it to prevent the boat from capsizing. It was like a cardio exercise.”
