The Czech Republic Has Put Forward An Ultimatum To Russia. If Moscow Refuses, The Russian Embassy Will Be Paralyzed

If Russia does not immediately allow the return to Moscow of 20 previously deported Czech diplomats, the Czech Republic will take measures that paralyze the work of the Russian embassy in Prague. Czech Foreign Minister Jakub Kulhanek wrote about this on Twitter.

According to Kulhanek, he warned Russian Ambassador Alexander Zmeevsky that if Czech diplomats cannot return by noon on April 22, then the staff of Russian diplomats at the embassy in Prague will be reduced to match the state of the Czech embassy in Moscow – up to five people.

“Russia’s response was disproportionate and paralyzed our embassy. Today I protested against this action,” Kulhanek told Novinky.cz.

According to the head of the Czech Foreign Ministry, there is an agreement on this procedure between him, President Milos Zeman and Prime Minister Andrei Babis.

“Russian-Czech relations have entered an extremely difficult stage, and I am not happy about this,” Kulhanek said.

Russian Foreign Ministry Speaker Maria Zakharova replied that she was proposing “to Prague to leave ultimatums for communication within NATO” and said that tomorrow the conversation with the Czech Ambassador would be continued at the Russian Foreign Ministry, TASS reports.

  • On April 17, the Czech Republic expelled 18 Russian diplomats on suspicion of the involvement of the main directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Federation in the explosions of ammunition depots in Vrbetica on October 16, 2014. Prime Minister Babis said that the explosion of 60 tons of explosives was organized by Russian spies, and the Kremlin is responsible for the death of two Czechs and damage “worth billions.”
  • On April 18, Russia responded by expelling 20 Czech diplomats from the country.
