Kenneth Allen Thomas or the “dancing dad” sparked a storm of positive energy on the internet with daily videos from dances with his son who was diagnosed with cancer. Through the dance, Thomas tried to convey an optimistic vibe to his son and his family so that they could all overcome the great difficulty that life brought them.
In a video that is now viral (on TikTok it has over 1.3 million views) and is called “When your son no longer has cancer” Thomas and his son, Christian, who beat leukemia in November 2018 , seem to be dancing outside their house wearing matching clothes and with 2 huge smiles on their faces.
When Christian was diagnosed with leukemia in June 2018, Thomas, a father of four, said their daily life as a family was hit hard. Daily visits to the hospital as the little one did the first round of chemotherapy.
At the time, Thomas had to restrict operations at his New Jersey dance studio, Level Dance Complex, so that he and his wife could care for Christian and their other three children.
But his dance never stopped
Every day, Thomas danced with Christian – even during his extended hospital stay – to create a positive mood in his family. He then posted the videos on his social media.
“I took all these strategies and tools that I learned as a dancer and choreographer, and I set the tone for my family, the tone for the doctors, the team,” Thomas said.
He was determined to create a “positive atmosphere for them”.
Thomas and his family were ready to fight a long battle against cancer. He recalled believing that it would take more than “300 days to two years”.
After 149 days, the little fighter was declared cancer-free. “I guess you would call it a miracle,” he said. “But I think that’s because we did our father-son dance routines.”
However, the little boy’s father realized that he was not only helping his family. Very quickly, social media users realized this and everyday videos went viral.
“The only thing that was very, very powerful was that we were helping a lot of people who were in the same situation or fighting for their own,” he said.
November marks the 36th month of Christian without cancer.
