Hackers tried to sell the data of more than half a million users of the Turkish cryptocurrency exchange BtcTurk. The exchange has confirmed the data breach, but assures that users’ money is safe.
Attackers managed to gain access to confidential information of users, including their names, identification numbers (ID), email addresses, date of birth and mobile phone numbers. User passwords are irreversibly encrypted using the PBKDF2 algorithm, so they could not be stolen.
BtcTurk confirmed a data leak of 516 954 users who registered on the site before July 2018. BtcTurk technicians said they did not find any security breaches. Exchange employees deny the existence of cyberattacks, during which data could “merge”. BtcTurk has assured users that their funds are safe so they can safely conduct transactions on the platform. BtcTurk also reported that attackers were unable to gain access to information about users’ balances and their bank accounts. The exchange has already begun to interact with potential victims of the information leak.
“The leak was due to a breach of the security of the data carrier. This may be due to raw information extracted from our database, which we were going to transfer to one of our partners legally, ”suggested the security specialists of BtcTurk.
Exchange clients are advised to change passwords, update two-factor authentication data and not pass this information on to third parties. To avoid becoming a victim of phishing attacks, you should not click on suspicious links.
In April, the Korean exchange Hotbit also reported a data breach of about 2 million users and was forced to suspend its work.
