The daughter of former President Kennedy, the new US Ambassador to Australia

The US President, Joe Biden, has chosen 64-year-old Carolyn Kennedy, the last child of the assassinated former President John F. Kennedy who is still alive, to fill the position of US Ambassador to Australia, his services reported in a bulletin made public.

The appointment of the former ambassador of the Barack Obama administration to Japan (2013-2017) is subject to the approval of the Senate.

Her appointment to the White House as a diplomat was generally expected; it was announced almost a year after Biden took office, as Republican senators are delaying most ratification procedures for key ambassadors.

Mrs. Kennedy, who has studied law and written several books, is the oldest surviving member of the former Democratic president’s family. Her father was murdered in 1963, Jackie’s mother died of cancer, and her brother, John, died in a plane crash.

In Canberra, it will take on the task of strengthening the joint US-Australian front, amid continuing escalation of tensions with China in the Indo-Pacific region.

The announcement in September of the AUKUS deal, which included the purchase of US nuclear-powered submarines by the Australian Navy, angered Beijing, which spoke of an “extremely irresponsible” move.

Earlier this month, Biden’s special envoy for the Indo-Pacific region, Curt Campbell, said China was waging an “economic war” against Australia to bring it to its knees.

A photo of Mrs. Kennedy remains famous: as a small child, she was hiding under the legendary Resolute Desk in the White House.

She resisted the urging of Democrats, who wanted to see her enter the political arena, for a number of years, preferring a life dedicated to writing, especially on civil and civil rights issues, and her work at the famous New York Metropolitan Museum. .

But she would return to the stage in 2008 to passionately support Barack Obama, whom she described as an inspirational and reminiscent of her father.

After resigning from her diplomatic post in Tokyo, Ms. Kennedy took a seat on the board of the Boeing giant.
