The death of Andrea Purgatori: the different diagnoses and the infection, here’s what we know

The more experts consulted, the more opinions received, a therapy that did not seem to have positive effects. Indeed it would only have negative effects on Andrew Purgatori who, to his friends, said: «I’m exhausted, it’s hard for me to do even the simplest thing». This is where the investigation starts and what the magistrates are looking for is the link between the journalist’s death and “the behavior of health personnel”.

The next steps

A Tac will be done on Tuesday 25 July, the day after the autopsy. Prosecutor Giorgio Orano has entrusted Professor Luigi Marsella of the Tor Vergata Polyclinic with the task of ascertaining the causes and “any other useful circumstance” to reach a truth about the Purgatori case. The magistrate wonders “whether in the present case the recommendations indicated in the guidelines published by law 24/2017 or, failing that, the good clinical care practices have been respected”. It is also asked to clarify whether “there was an execution error in the concrete health practice”. Further insights could be made if necessary to clarify the causes of Andrea Purgatori’s death. The task of carrying out the examination was given to the forensic medicine institute of the Tor Vergata Polyclinic.

The suspects

There are two people registered in the register of suspects for manslaughter: the professor Gianfranco Gualdi of the Pius XI private clinic and his right arm Claudius DiBiasi. Gualdi is considered a luminary of radiology, radiologist consultant of the Vatican since 1981. From 1977 to 2000 he was the head of the Radiodiagnostic service for Roma Calcio. Among his patients also the former president of the Chamber Laura Boldrini. He has dozens of publications to his credit. According to the lawyer of both their actions were correct.

The diagnoses

The diagnosis made at the clinic, to which Andrea Purgatori would have been referred by his cardiologist, had been lung cancer with metastases spread to organs close to the brain. It dates back to early May. Hence the treatment with radiotherapy. The journalist would have died of an infectiona septic pericarditis, contracted when his body was greatly weakened by treatments that are suspected to be wrong due to an erroneous initial diagnosis according to family complaints.

Subsequent investigations, new opinions requested by Purgatori, would have shown the absence of brain metastases. Instead there would have been ischemic forms, sudden and sudden reductions in blood flow. One of these diagnoses is the one made in June by Alessandro Bozzao, professor of neuroradiology at La Sapienza and head of the radiology unit at Sant’Andrea: this detects ischemic traces, not metastases. According to Purgatori’s family there was also a dispute between the two doctors, but Professor Bozzao denies it. The hypothesis of ischemia was also made by the Humanitas clinic in Rozzano.
