The death toll from 3,000 in Myanmar after earthquake

The number of dead by the Myanmar earthquake has exceeded 3,000, with hundreds of missing, as rain forecasts started a new challenge for rescuers and humanitarian aid teams trying to rescue people.

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake last Friday (28), one of the strongest in the country in a century, which shook a region that houses 28 million people, overthrowing buildings and leaving many without food, water and shelter.

The deaths increased to 3,003 on Wednesday (2), with 4,515 injured and 351 missing, said the Mianmar embassy in Japan on Facebook, while rescuers run to find more.

As conditions can become even harder after the weather authorities have warned that off -season rains can threaten the most affected areas of the earthquake, such as Mandalay, Sagaing, and the capital Naypyidaw.

“The rain is coming and there are still many buried,” a humanitarian worker told Mianmar to Reuters. “And in Mandalay, especially if it begins to rain, the buried people will drown, even if they have survived so far.”

There were 53 aid transportation to Myanmar, added the embassy in Japan in his post, while more than 1,900 rescue teams arrived from 15 countries, including Southeast Asia and China, India and Russia.

Despite the devastation, the chief of the board, Min Aung Hlaing, will leave his country hit by the disaster on Thursday (3) for a trip to a regional summit in Bangkok, state television said.

Civil war

The rains can increase the challenges faced by the rescue groups, which have requested access to all affected areas despite the civil war.

The military has struggled to govern Myanmar since his return to power in 2021, when he dismissed the elected civil government of the prize winner, Nobel Aung San Suu Kyi.

Generals are internationally isolated from power and Mianmar’s basic services, including health care, have been reduced in the midst of conflict.

On Wednesday, state-owned MRTV said a ceasefire would immediately come into force for 20 days to support relief efforts after the earthquake, but warned that the authorities would “respond properly” if the rebels launched attacks.

The measure occurred after a great rebel alliance declared a ceasefire on Tuesday to help humanitarian effort.

Thailand

Almost a week after the earthquake, teams from Thailand, looking for survivors, searched a mountain of wreckage left after a skyscraper in the capital, Bangkok, collapsed during construction.

Rescuers are using mechanical excavators and tractors to break 100 tons of concrete to locate anyone who is still alive after the disaster that killed 15 people, with 72 still missing.

The death toll in Thailand across the country is 22.
