The death toll from a cyclone in RS rises to seven

The Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul confirmed this Saturday (17) two more deaths due to the extratropical cyclone that hit the state. With this, the death toll since last Thursday rises to seven.

According to data from the State Civil Defense, one of the dead is a 73-year-old man, whose car was dragged into the Caí River, in the municipality of Bom Principle. The other victim, still unidentified, died in Caraá.

The other deaths were recorded in the cities of Maquiné, Novo Hamburgo and São Leopoldo, which recorded two occurrences.

So far, eight people remain missing, six in Caraá and two in Maquiné.

The extratropical cyclone that formed in the northeast region of Rio Grande do Sul caused heavy rains, windstorms and flooding in the north coast of the state, metropolitan region and Serra Gaúcha.

The volumes of rain recorded in 12 hours between Thursday (15) and Friday (16) are equivalent to what is expected for up to two and a half months of precipitation in the affected regions, points out the specialist. “For the month of June, it was the biggest accumulation of rain in 24 hours in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul in the last 107 years”, commented MetSul meteorologist Estael Sias, in an interview with CNN this Saturday (17).

She also reported that the cyclone is moving away from the state. “The worst has gone. He is already moving away from Rio Grande do Sul. We already have the domain of drier air, which brought a drop in temperature in several parts of Rio Grande do Sul.”

The floods also jeopardized health services in several locations. Hospital Santa Luzia, in Capão da Canoa, on the north coast of Rio Grande do Sul, temporarily canceled services due to a flood. The same problem affected attendances at the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in the municipality of Sapiranga, in Vale dos Sinos, where patients had to be removed with the help of firefighters.
