The tropical cyclone Freddy killed more than 300 people in Mozambique, with authorities needing several days to assess the extent of the damage and count the dead.
The deadly cyclone hit southern Africa for the second time at the weekend, following its first pass in late February. It is one of the longest-lasting tropical cyclones on record and one of the deadliest in Africa in recent years.
Bodies buried in the mud
At least 53 people have died in Mozambique’s Zambezia province, authorities announced late yesterday, Wednesday evening, more than doubling the previous toll they had released.
Malawi has so far counted 225 dead, while there are hundreds injured and some still missing. The tropical storm killed around 27 people in Madagascar and Mozambique before making a second landfall in the latter.
Continued rain and power outages hampered search and rescue efforts this week as Cyclone Freddy caused severe flooding, blocked roads and left bodies and homes buried in mud.
