The death toll from the collapse of a section of highway in southern China has risen to 48, according to the latest death toll carried by state media today. About 20 vehicles were trapped due to the collapse of a section of highway connecting Meichu City and Dabu County, Guangdong Province at around 02:10 (21:10 Tuesday Greek time), according to the New China News Agency. The public television network CCTV, for its part, spoke of a “natural geological disaster”, due to the recent “continuous heavy rains”. Water pipes have been damaged in recent weeks in the industrial province of Guangdong, with the capital Canton, causing large-scale flooding and landslides.
