The debate on the ratification of Sweden's accession to NATO has begun in the Turkish National Assembly

The Turkish National Assembly today began the debate on the approval of its accession protocol Sweden in the NATOwith the crucial vote expected this evening, and with the possibility of ending 20 months of negotiations between Ankara and Stockholm to give the Turkey the green light.

Sweden announced in May 2022, in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, its bid to join NATOat the same time as Finland, which in April became the 31st member of the Atlantic Alliance.

To satisfy Ankara's demands, Sweden, for its part, made amendments to its Constitution and adopted a new anti-terrorism law, as Ankara accused Stockholm of harboring Kurdish fighters who had taken refuge on its territory, some of whom are considered terrorists by Turkey.

Turkey and Hungary are the only countries that have not yet ratified Sweden's request to join the Alliance.

The main ally of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Devlet Bakhceli, thanks to which the head of state won a majority in the National Assembly in the last electionsassured that his MPs would vote for Sweden's membership, predicting a favorable outcome.

If approved by the Plenary of the National Assembly, the protocol is expected to receive the final signature from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
