The Delta mutation has reached Colombia

The first case of transmission Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 in the Andean country was announced yesterday by the President of Colombia, Ivan Duque.

“The National Institutes of Health has identified the presence of the Delta variant in our country in a case that underwent tests in the city of Cali and is already being treated with all the required health protocols,” Mr Duque said.

He called on his fellow citizens to be vaccinated for COVID-19 as soon as possible and pointed out that this variant strain has been identified to this stage in 105 countries around the world and has been shown to be much more contagious than the original version of the virus.

The director of the National Institutes of Health, Marta Lucia Ospina, clarified for her part that the person infected with the Delta variant has been isolated after returning from a trip to the USA, according to the Athens News Agency.

In Colombia, with a population of 50 million, the official death toll from the pandemic has risen to 118,188, with a total of 4,705,734 infections., according to the figures of the Ministry of Health.
