Sir Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, acting deputy foreign minister of the Taliban, in a surprise statement called on the leadership of the country of Afghanistan to open schools for girls. Sir Stanekzai, who previously headed a team of negotiators at the Taliban’s political office in Doha before US forces withdraw from Afghanistan in 2021, said in a speech at the weekend that restrictions on girls’ and women’s education were inconsistent with Islamic Sharia law. “We ask the leaders of the Islamic Emirate to open the doors of education,” he said, according to local network Tolo, referring to the name the Taliban use for his government. “During the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the gates of knowledge were open to both men and women,” he said. “Today, out of a population of 40 million, we are committing an injustice against 20 million people,” he added, referring to Afghanistan’s female population.
