The detention of the American journalist Gershkovich in Russia was extended until January 30

A Moscow court today extended by two months, until January 30, the detention of the American journalist Evan Gerskovich, who was arrested in late March in Russia.

The detention period of Evan Gerskovich (…) was extended by two months (…), until 30 January 2024, the court of Lefortovsky pointed out in a statement.

A Wall Street Journal reporter, Gershkovich was arrested by Russian security services while reporting in Yekaterinburg, Urals, on March 29.

Since then he has been held in Moscow’s Lefortovo prison, which is used by the Russian security services (FSB) to hold prisoners in near-total isolation.

The 31-year-old journalist, who has worked as a correspondent in Moscow and for the Agence France-Presse (AFP), is accused of espionage, which is punishable by 20 years in prison. He rejects the accusations, as does Washington, his newspaper, his environment and his family.
