The ‘devil nurse’ in prison for her whole life – The horrific story of Lucy Letby

She will spend the rest of her life in prison Lucy Letby, as the court announced. The “evil nurse”, as the British media has dubbed her, killed seven newborns and attempted to murder at least six more while working at the Countess of Chester Hospital in northwest England.

“This was a callous, methodical and cynical series of infanticides…,” said Judge James Goss, who sentenced Letby to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. “A deep malice combined with sadism characterized your actions… You have shown no remorse. There are no extenuating… You will spend the rest of your life in prison“, said the judge, justifying the amount of the sentence due to the “extreme gravity” of the crimes.

Lucy Letby refused to appear in court today to hear her sentence. Her absence was described as a final act of malice by the mother of one of the infant victims.

The 33-year-old committed the heinous acts while working night shifts during the period between 2015 and 2016. The court was told Letby poisoned some of the infants by injecting insulin, while injecting others with air. He also force-fed some of the newborns with milk.

From June 2015 to June 2016, seven premature babies died suddenly at the Countess of Chester Hospital with no apparent cause of death. In all the tragic cases, Lucy Letby was involved, as responsible for the care of the infants.

From an investigation it was found “the constant malevolent presence when things took a turn for the worse”.

As mentioned by Daily Mailalthough at trial he denied the charges, handwritten notes were found in her home in which she confessed to her horrific crimes: “I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough to take care of them. I’ll never have kids or get married or learn what it’s like to have a family’, ‘I’m a horrible, evil person’ and ‘I’m evil, I did this.’

Last Friday, Letby was found guilty by a jury of these crimes. The life sentence – without the possibility of parole – by a Manchester court on the serial baby killer is very rare in English law and is considered commensurate with the horror this case has caused. Only three women in Britain have previously been sentenced to a similar sentence, including serial killers Myra Hindley, and Rosemary West.

Before the sentence was announced, emotional, heartbreaking accounts were heard in the courtroom today from parents of babies Letby killed or tried to kill, with the parents speaking of the horror and trauma of losing their babies. “There is no punishment that can compare to the excruciating agony we have experienced as a consequence of your actions”said the mother of a newborn boy, who was murdered at Letby’s hands.

Among the baby killer’s victims were twins and even triplets, two of whom died within 24 hours of each other after returning from leave in June 2016. The third was saved, after his parents’ persistent pleas for him to be transferred to another hospital. “Lucy Letby ruined our lives. The anger and hatred I have for her will never go away.”said the father of triplets.

A mother of twins, one of whom was murdered while the other survived, said she hoped Letby lived for many years and suffered every day for what she had done. “My family will never think of you again – from today you are nothing”the mother said.

Police continue to sift through thousands of files looking for possible additional Letby victims. The Guardian reported in its report that police are investigating dozens of “suspicious” incidents, in which 30 infants are said to have been victims. “When you commit such horrific crimes, it’s cowardice not to confront the victims”the prime minister said Rishi Sunakcommenting on Letby’s absence from court.
