Some are frightened by the disastrous results of the past (uneven and patchy shades, orange reflections …), others are enthusiastic about it and consider it simple and effective. And then there is who how Blake Lively went further by making the hair coloring ritual a moment to share, leaving actor Ryan Reynolds to apply the color. This is trust in the couple.
DIY dye always arouses mixed emotions.
Yet even those who think they lack the skills to handle the contents of canned dyes can achieve satisfying results. The important thing is to follow a few simple rules. With the help of a formulator, a hairstylist and a colorist we have identified the 7 steps that allow you to reach the goal.
THE NUANCE OF DESIRES
Appearances can be deceiving, and it can happen that you end up with a head of a different color than the one depicted on the box. “The packs that really simplify the selection also have a table that allows you to view the results according to the shade of your hair”, he underlines Monica Cicorello, Soco Professional Technical Manager. The choice of shade makes the difference and is a key moment. “The most common mistake is to get the tone wrong. To obtain uniformity, especially if the need is to ensure extended coverage of gray hair, it is always advisable to create a personalized palette by mixing the desired color with another lighter one belonging to the same family “, he explains. Marco Rizzi, hairstylist Namu Hair e Phyto Ambassador. “For example, combining dark brown with golden or golden blonde with brown creates a cocktail of pigments of different sizes that can also give a multi-faceted finish”.
“There is a trick to cancel any unwanted effect: adding a small dose of ash color dissolves the red reflections from the brown and cancels the yellow cob in the blonde,” emphasizes Cicorello.
THE INGREDIENTS
To avoid finding yourself with stringy and runaway hair, it is advisable to check that the formula contains the friendly ingredients of the hair. “As with any beauty product, it’s a good idea to read the ingredient label,” says the colorist Leiana Hillo di eSalon. “Moisturizing vitamin E, softening provitamin B5, elasticizing keratin, softening chamomile and strengthening proteins: these are some of the active ingredients that should not be missing to avoid finding yourself with dry and fragile lengths”, underlines the colorist Leiana Hillo di eSalon.
PREPARATIONS
“Before starting, it is always advisable to get a rich moisturizer, oil or petroleum jelly, to be generously distributed along the perimeter of the hairline, on the forehead, temples and ears at a distance of at least one centimeter from the hair”, warns Leiana Hillo. «Always avoid spreading the cosmetic on the roots, because it creates a slippery surface that prevents the pigment from being absorbed. Getting organized in time and getting all the necessary tools is another aspect that should not be overlooked before starting. Together with the contents of the box you need clothespins, a bowl, the protective product to ward off stains and a brush ».
THE APPLICATION
The mixture should not be “brushed” at random and it is always better that the hair is not recently washed. «After dividing the hair into sections, starting from the nape of the neck or the top of the head does not matter. What matters is to proceed section by section, spreading the dye starting from the roots of the hair, moving in the direction of growth, and for about ten centimeters from the base, using the special flat brush with short semi-rigid bristles. We proceed by moving thin strands ”, underlines Cicorello. “This process may seem tiring because you have your arms raised for a long time, and tedious, since it is painstaking work, but only in this way can you get a good result.”
THE LAYING TIME
«The recommendation is to apply the coloring mixture on the roots (in the manner indicated in the previous point), leaving it to act for 20 minutes. After this time, the distribution on the rest of the hair is completed, taking care to carefully and gently squeeze the locks in your hands, and wait for the minute residues indicated on the package »says Cicorello. “Regrowth is the natural shade and it is here that the new color must act incisively, while on the lengths there are pigment residues from the previous treatment that could compromise the result: therefore the dye must act for a shorter time”. But not only. “Spreading the color immediately over the entire length makes the nuance dark, and this is the result of the pigment overload” adds Marco Rizzi. There is another recommendation. “As the shutter speed passes, the vision of the nuance that is seen reflected in the mirror should not trigger panic. The intensity is due to the oxidation process and is completely normal. A premature wash would prevent the pigment from depositing homogeneously “.
THE RINSE
Monica Cicorello suggests a little additional attention. «At the end of the exposure time, massaging the hair mass very well for 3 minutes allows the color to spread even where it has not arrived. The rinsing must then be thorough and prolonged, associated with the passage of the fingers over the entire scalp under the jet of warm water. In this way it becomes a sort of “cure” that allows the stem to regain its natural pH, thus restoring its balance ».
THE FINAL TOUCH
Using the plate to fix the newly settled pigments in the barrel is a good idea. «After washing and drying your hair, you distribute and dry a heat protector and then you pass the styler strand by strand. In this way the color lasts longer because the pigment is sealed », explains Marco Rizzi.
In reality it didn’t end there. Continuing to constantly take care of the color, then, is the best way to preserve its brightness and integrity. «It is important to use shampoos and conditioners formulated for colored hair. This indication mainly concerns the detergent, because excessively degreasing and aggressive components cause the lifting of the scales and release the pigment », concludes Cicorello.
