Paolo Rumiz is a journalist and writer, one of the best at narrating wars, conflicts, borders, peoples and stories. In a recent podcast, Other Storiestold the journalist Mario Calabresi of how in Sarajevo, before the bloody war that broke out between Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1995, there was a climate of brotherhood and coexistence between different civilizations and religions. Sarajevo was a city where, he explains, “ethnic groups mingled, where the rabbi went to dinner with the imam and then
everyone went hunting with the Orthodox priests in the mountains. Sarajevo was a European Jerusalem. The war took place because it took just a few men, well posted on the roofs of the city, to convince everyone that it was better to divide the masses by ethnicity, bringing the country to self-destruction. All with the complicity of the West ».
Rumiz recalls how the massacres of that war resemble those underway in Ukraine, of how Bucha or Mariupol refer, for example, to the Vukovar massacre. And how fundamental it is to remember who is besieging and who is besieged, who is a butcher and who is a lamb, who has started the war, who has invaded and who is undergoing a war and defending himself.
In recent weeks there has been a great misunderstanding on this point, confusion given above all by the propaganda of Vladimir Putin who continues to peddle a “denazification” of a country with Nazi methods. Measures used both in Ukraine, where massacres take place, as well as in Russia, where freedom is effectively banned.
But there is another profound and beautiful analysis of Rumiz. The “Balkan Line” (which also includes Ukraine) is a set of states and lands that divide Russia, Asia and Europe: it is a sort of “European periphery” where you can see what Europe’s dream really is. There, in fact, the Slavic, Jewish, German and Latin souls coexist and «it is normal to go to visit a neighbor who speaks a language different from yours or to see representatives of different religions going to drink vodka together. Today Europe is more a dream of those who do not have it, of those who do not. Not of those who have lived there for centuries“.
