The American Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA spoke about the original solution that was invented to add power to the NASA InSight space probe.
The InSight probe has been on the surface of Mars since 2018 and has dropped power levels over time. To add energy to the apparatus, scientists decided to clean the solar panels from the dust accumulated on them. This helped to increase the generated energy and delay the moment when it was necessary to turn off scientific instruments.
The lander’s robotic arm scattered sand near one solar panel, which helped the wind remove some of the dust from the panel. As a result, for one sol, or Martian day, there was an increase of about 30 watt-hours.
As noted by NASA, the increase in the generated energy should delay the shutdown of instruments by several weeks, which will save valuable time for collecting additional scientific data. The NASA team will try to continue dusting the same solar panel on Saturday, June 5, 2021.
