The Duke of Edinburgh has thought about suing Netflix over one of the episodes of the series The Crown.
According to the Sunday edition of the timesthe late father of the current British monarch consulted his lawyers at Farrer & Co, the law firm that has served the royal family for a century, to learn what legal actions he could take against the production company after being very “disappointed » from the second season of the series which chronicled some episodes of his adolescence in Nazi Germany, the Times revealed on Sunday.
In particular, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband was disturbed by the way in which the series chronicled the death in 1937 of one of his sisters, the Princess Cecilia.
In the episode, the princess flies her family to the UK after her brother is punished by his Scottish boarding school (Gordonstoun) and not allowed to spend his holidays in Germany with her. The plane on which Cecilia, her husband and their two children were traveling to the UK crashed en route, killing the family, a tragedy for which the Duke of Edinburgh’s father Andrew of Greece and Denmark blames his son in The Crown. However, Cecilia’s trip to the UK had nothing to do with the Duke of Edinburgh, who was consequently very unhappy with the series.
A friend of the royal family, who dined with him shortly after the episode aired, recalls al times. “I remember sitting next to the Duke of Edinburgh at dinner and how appalled he was by the series and what was being said about him,” he said. Meanwhile, British royal historian and biographer Hugo Vickers reveals that the former monarch’s consort had met with his lawyers, but later decided not to sue.
In recent weeks, the concerns of the British royal family about the way The Crown tells their lives have increased. The times also reveals that the Prince William believes that the series is damaging the image of the royal family, especially now that the events narrated by the episodes are getting closer in time.
Premiering this week, the new season of the series portrays a very unpopular side of King Charles IIIwhich is seen not only disagree with Diana, but who even plots to make his mother abdicate. Famous friends of the monarch, such as Judi Dench, have expressed their unease with the series, asking Netflix to clarify that the events narrated in the various episodes are pure fiction, due to the damage that could be caused by viewers who take them for real .
