Appeal to the leaders participating in this year’s COP28 in Dubai to make this the 28th UN Climate Conference a turning point analogous to Paris agreement for the acceleration of climate action, addressed King Charles. “The Earth does not belong to us, we belong to the Earth,” he emphasized.
As the countries begin two weeks of intensive negotiations on oil, gas and coal the king pointed out that “records are broken so often that we become apathetic to what we hear”.
During his first speech as a monarch on the Climate from the COP28 podium in which he is participating and where he represents the British government, following the invitation of the United Arab Emirates, he characteristically stated: “I pray with all my heart that this year’s COP28 will be another turning point for real change”as the world is “not on the right track” in dealing with Climate Change and the global economy will be at risk if there is no swift environmental redress, he said.
“We are living a terrifying experience of a simultaneous change in all ecological conditions”
King Charles referred to the global effects of Climate Change citing as examples the cyclones that have caused massive disasters in island countries such as Vanuatu to the floods in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan and the devastating forest fires in the United States, Canada and Greece .
“We are living a terrifying experience of simultaneous change in all ecological conditions, at a rate that exceeds the capabilities of nature”, he said as the Athens News Agency points out, calling for the reform of the global financial system in favor of the energy transition.
“If we do not quickly repair and restore the unique economy of Nature, based on harmony and balance, which is our last support, our very economy and our survival will be endangered,” warned the King of England speaking on the participation of multilateral organizations and the private sector in climate action, on the role of the insurance sector and on the acceleration of innovation in the field of renewable energy.
