The park of Elliniko will be built and will operate exclusively with the money of the investor without the Greek State, the neighboring Municipalities and the citizens to pay not a single euro. The studies are in progress and will be completed by the end of 2022, when the tender for the construction of the park will be finalized, the total cost which is estimated to amount to 250 million euros. The above refers to answers to questions from journalists on the occasion of yesterday’s online presentation by Lamda Development for the design and creation of The Ellinikon Park, the largest coastal park in Europe, which will dominate the heart of Elliniko.
More than 500,000 visitors to Experience Park in six months
As it is pointed out, a large part of the Hellinikon park will be completed by the end of 2025. Already a part of it, the Experience Park, with a total area of 75,000 sq.m. opened to the public from December 2021, much earlier than expected. To date, the Experience Park has been visited by over 500,000 visitors. Starting at Experience Park, Elliniko Park will grow until it becomes the largest coastal park in Europe, which will cover an area of 2,000,000 sq.m. The cost of the park studies alone to date exceeds 7 million euros, an amount that has been fully covered by the investor. At the same time, as pointed out, the principle of sustainability – primarily its environmental and social component – are at the heart of the design of both the park and development as a whole.
In particular, it is emphasized that the creation of a huge area of greenery within the urban fabric results in multiplier benefits for society. The regulation of the microclimate, the reduction of the carbon footprint and the reduction of the flood phenomena are at the core of its design with the aim of protecting the ecosystem.
The park will be able to fully meet its needs for irrigation and electricity, while it will fully compensate for its carbon footprint in its life cycle. Its water needs will be fully met through the standard wastewater treatment plant that will be created, while the intelligent lighting and energy management infrastructure will ensure the most efficient consumption.
In response to relevant questions, it is pointed out that sections of the runways will be maintained and reused as part of the pedestrian and bicycle network and will be integrated into the park. Their preservation was part of the project planning from the beginning as the goal is to highlight the history of the area.
How many acres of high greenery will be in the total and how many low vegetation
As it is pointed out, the park of Elliniko was designed taking into account the Mediterranean climate and the diversity of Greek vegetation. More than 1,000,000 new plants and trees will be planted: pines, logs, olives, cypresses, plane trees, which are durable and suitable for the climate and conditions of the area. While 2,000 existing trees have already been identified, they will be kept in temporary planting sites to be transplanted to the new park. The park will start from the outskirts of Hymettus and will extend to the sea.
A key part of the design for Elliniko Pole is the creation of an extensive network of routes, longer than 50 km, with sidewalks, bike paths and light traffic roads. This will include a unique pedestrian street 56 meters wide and over 2.5 km long, which will connect Vouliagmeni Avenue with the coastal front through the park of Elliniko. Thus, the park will start from the outskirts of Ymittos and will extend to the sea connecting the surrounding Municipalities and uniting the new neighborhoods that will be created.
As announced, the internationally renowned architectural firm Sasaki, which has designed and implemented some of the largest and most impressive urban parks in the world, in collaboration with the Greek office Doxiadis, sign the design and study of The Ellinikon Park.
As mentioned yesterday by the CEO of Lamda Development, Odysseas Athanassiou, the park of Elliniko is more than a green, large park. It is a new proposal that introduces in our country and internationally a new way of life where nature, people and the most advanced applications of technology will coexist harmoniously.
The areas of The Ellinikon Park
The Olympic Square, as announced, will be a highlight of the Olympic heritage, while the amphitheater of the area will be able to host concerts and other events. At the highest point of the Park, open-air galleries will be created that will host sculptures and works of modern art, with an emphasis on Greek artists.
In an area larger than the field of Areos, there will be thematic areas, such as vineyards, olive groves and fields, inviting visitors on a journey of discovery of Greek agriculture. The Saarinen area is dominated by the main building of the Eastern Airport of Elliniko, which for decades was the gateway to Athens. The historic building acquires new life as an exhibition center and space for cultural events.
The Trachonon Stream is delimited and its riverbed is released, resulting in the revitalization of the local ecosystem and the transformation of the surrounding area. The remodeled canoe-kayak Lake of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games will be a place where one can enjoy the magnificent view from the observatory and explore the lake.
Finally, an integral part of The Ellinikon Park is the Experience Park, in the area of the three hangars of the Air Force, which has already become the new destination for moments of relaxation in the southern suburbs.
A “smart” park of the future
The Ellinikon Park will be the first “smart” park in Greece that will incorporate smart solutions for the safety of visitors and the protection of the natural environment, such as lighting systems that will adjust the intensity according to the season and time of day, but and systems for continuous monitoring of environmental conditions, energy and water savings. The goal of Lamda Development is the smart infrastructure of Elliniko to be a model at national and international level.
