The Emerald Life of Mercedes-Maybach

How do you imagine a Smeralda life? In an exclusive location, perhaps with a yacht at your disposal and a dream car. This is the thrill we felt, for a day, with Mercedes-Maybach at Phi Beach in Baja Sardinia, one of the most luxurious clubs on the Costa Smeraldawith a trip by motorboat to Caprera and La Maddalena. The test of the cars, the SUV GLS 600, 3982 displacement, and the sedan S580, same displacement and 525 horsepower, this time we do it as a passenger because those who buy a car like this in most cases can count on a driver.

And so the focus is on the rear seats that offer maximum comfort, massaging and extendable armchairs, a muffled atmosphere, colours that change according to the mood and even flutes that remain magnetically anchored. to their supports to be able to comfortably sip champagne on the sunny streets of Sardinia.

The Emerald Life of Mercedes Maybach

“The choice of Phi beach is not accidental. We have had an important partner for four years with this location, which is one of Mercedes’ luxury hubs,” explains Eugenio Blasetti, Head of External Affairs for Mercedes-Benz Italia. “These cars need to be presented and introduced to the world for which they are designed: luxury locations. Rich entrepreneurs often spend short, relaxing days like these. They arrive, take a boat ride, and then return to their city.”

Maybach has a long history: “To present the best of the best”: this was the ambition expressed by Karl Maybach and his father Wilhelm when they presented the W 3 for the first time in 1921, the first series-production vehicle produced by Maybach Motorenbau GmbH. A car that had some super innovative features. From the four-wheel braking system (never before seen on a German car) to the epicyclic reduction gear with six-cylinder engine (which allowed all speeds to be managed with just one gear), to the luxurious wood and leather interior, the design was revolutionary. The car thrilled the public. Around 2,300 cars were built until 1941, when production finally ceased.

“In 2002, it was decided to revive the Maybach brand. In reality, this was not successful because the knowledge had disappeared sixty years after its end: production continued until 2013 as an independent brand, but it did not work and was then suspended”, continues Blasetti. “Luciano Pavarotti and Giorgio Armani (who should still have one) bought it, today it is a collector’s car, but the lack of the Mercedes brand penalized the car. Instead, the choice to give life to Mercedes-Maybach, as an ultimate luxury brand, was a winning one. In Italy last year, 51 entrepreneurs, industrialists, celebrities chose this car, with a growth of 43% compared to 2022”.

And staying on the subject of celebrities, after a stop at Phi Beach, where Leonardo di Caprio and his girlfriend Vittoria Peretti, the Beckhams, Michelle Hunzicker and many others are at home, we head off towards the open sea on a motorboat. “Maybach is the most traditional and ancient brand, but also the one that always pushes itself further. In some cars there is a very strong nautical inspiration”, continues Eugenio Blasetti. “Let’s not forget that the ambition of the founding fathers was to colonize land, sea, sky and space. The brand has a three-pointed star for this, but there is also a registered version with four.

Maybach, a car born to amaze and leave its mark, as happened in the case of the collaboration with David LaChapelle and will continue to do so in the coming years with new important collaborations.
