The EMISSION research project by Space Hellas has been completed

The research project EMISSION was completed by Space Hellas, project coordinator and the participating bodies, National Observatory of Athens, University of West Attica, DRAXIS Environmental and ENCO. As mentioned in the relevant announcement, the EMISSION project concerns the development of an information platform for monitoring and recording the conditions of air pollution in an urban smart environment, through a wireless network of sensors. EMISSION focuses on the monitoring of gaseous and particulate pollutants that are associated with serious effects on human health and for which there is a history of high levels or exceedances of concentration limits in the greater Athens area.

The object of the project was the completion and thickening of the National Air Pollution Monitoring Network (EDPAR) within the Urban Complex of Attica, with the location of new stations for the measurement of gaseous pollution in areas not covered by the existing network.

The project utilized integrated sensor systems and applications for computers and smartphones and helped to cover gaps in existing metering infrastructure, mainly in terms of informing citizens in real time.

Various types of state-of-the-art technologies were used for the implementation of the system, including wireless sensor networks, data networks, databases, geographic information systems (GIS), atmospheric parameter calibration processes through instrumentation, Web analytical mapping techniques, phantom forecasting techniques smartphones and internet applications.

EMISSION was implemented in the framework of the RESEARCH-CREATE-INNOVATE Action and was co-financed by the European Union and national resources through the OP. Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship & Innovation (EPANEK).

Dr. Evangelos Gerasopoulos, head of the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry of the National Observatory of Athens, which has the role of business administrator of the system, emphasizes that, “such collaborations between Greek research and academic institutions that pioneer once again the dynamics of development of innovative services and products, with the partnership of research and entrepreneurship in our country “.
