The story of “The Eternal”, of Héctor Oesterheld and with drawings of Francisco Solano López first appeared in the magazine “Hora Cero Weekly”, in 1957, according to the Argentine newspaper “Clarín”. The first book was published between this year and 1959.

The plot received international influences surrounding the world at the time, such as post-World War tension, space race and fear of nuclear bombs. In this first publication, the political tone was not so strong.

The context changed in 1969, when the editors of the magazine “Gente” asked for a second version of “The Eternal”, according to research by Fabio Bortolazzo Pinto, from the University of the Rio dos Sinos Valley, published in Extra Prension.
