The European Commission announced today that it had informed Poland that it would withhold a fine from European funds earmarked for Warsaw for ignoring a ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union and refusing to pay the price. The decision is taken for the first time in European journals.
The commission decided to retain the fines for delays related to a coal mine that Warsaw should have closed, according to a spokesman.
The amount due for the period 20/9/2021 – 19/10/2021 amounts to 15 million euros.
The fine is payable, even if Warsaw and Prague signed an agreement on February 3rd on the Turof giant mine near the Czech Republic and Germany, ending the dispute.
In May 2021, a European Court of Justice ordered the Polish government to close the Turoff mine due to its harmful environmental consequences, pending a decision on the substance of the case. In September, a court fined Warsaw 500,000 euros a day until the mine closed.
