The EU embargo on Russian coal is postponed to mid-August

European Union envoys are set to approve a ban on Russian coal imports on Thursday, which will take full effect in mid-August, a month later than originally proposed, an EU source told Reuters, following pressure from Germany to delay the measure.

The phasing out of Russian coal imports from the EU is a cornerstone of a fifth package of sanctions against Russia proposed by the EU Commission this week in response to atrocities in the Ukrainian city of Butsa.

Once approved, it will be the EU’s first ban on any energy imports from Russia since the Kremlin launched what it calls a “special operation” in Ukraine on February 24.

Oil and gas, which account for much larger imports from Moscow, remain untouched.
