The European Union (EU) has imposed sanctions on the two daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose names have been blacklisted by more than 200 people, most notably oligarchs and media executives close to the Kremlin.
Maria Vorontsova and Katerina Tikhonova, born in 1985 and 1986 respectively, are the daughters that Putin had with Lyudmila Putina, whom he divorced in 2013. The US and Britain had already imposed sanctions on them.
The names of another 217 people, including businessmen and politicians from the Luhansk and Donetsk regions, were added to the “black list”.
The fifth package of sanctions adopted by the EU Council of Ministers also includes a ban on imports of coal, timber, chemicals and other products from Russia. The coal import ban will take effect from the second week of August and existing contracts should be completed by then.
Many Russian ships will also be barred from docking in EU ports, and all transactions with four Russian banks, including VTB, will be banned. The Russian banks through which payments for Russian energy products are made (Sberbank, Gazprombank) were excluded, although it was decided to freeze the assets of the CEO of the former, Herman Gref.
“These sanctions were adopted following the atrocities committed by the Russian armed forces in Bhutan and other Russian-occupied areas,” said Josep Borrell, chief of The European Union.
