The European Commission today admitted it is a “difficult situation”, after the publication of a journalistic investigation which found that tens of thousands of migrants have been arrested and abandoned in the desert, in Morocco, Tunisia and Mauritania, with the financial support of the European Union. The investigation, lasting several months, was carried out by major media outlets, such as Le Monde and the Washington Post, in collaboration with the collective of journalists Lighthouse Reports. It reveals how “Europe supports, finances and is directly involved in covert operations in North African countries where every year tens of thousands of black people are abandoned in the desert or isolated areas to prevent them from coming to the European Union”.
