The European Commission is evaluating the response of the Greek authorities regarding the surveillance

The response of the Greek authorities on the issue of surveillance is under evaluation, the European Commission said today, while pointing out that it will continue to monitor the issue very closely.

Asked about this, during today’s press briefing, the representative of the Commission, responsible for matters of justice and the rule of law, Christian Wiegand, answered the following: “The Commission sent a letter to the Greek authorities on July 29, following previous reports regarding with the use of spyware in Greece, which is also highlighted in the Commission’s report on the rule of law, in July 2022. The same procedure was followed as with the other member states for which there have been reports of spyware use”.

Continuing, K. Vigard stated that the Commission has received the response from the Greek authorities and is now examining it. He also added that the Commission wants to collect information on the reporting of the use of spyware such as Pegasus or Predator and the possible interaction between EU data protection rules and the national security framework. “This is what we requested and received a response on these matters. At this stage we are looking into it and we continue to monitor this matter very closely,” the Commission spokesman stressed.

Besides, when asked what the Commission’s next step could be, the deputy representative, Dana Spinan, replied that it would depend on the evaluation of the response of the Greek authorities by the Commission’s competent services.

Mr Wigard finally pointed out that national security is the responsibility of the member states, however, the member states should apply the relevant EU law, including the jurisprudence of the European Court of Justice, when ensuring national security.
