H European Commission announced today that it is launching an investigation into the spread of “false information” and “illegal content” on social networks Meta (Facebook, Instagram) and TikTok, following the terrorist Hamas attacks against Israel.
The Commission has sent a formal request for information to these two platforms as part of the new European Digital Services (DSA) legislation. Specifically, requests information on the measures taken by Meta and TikTok to comply with their obligations related to the assessment and reduction of the risk of dissemination of illegal content and misinformation; after the Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel. From TikTok in particular, the Commission is asking to provide more information about the measures it has taken to reduce it risk of spreading illegal content, in particular the spread of terrorist and violent content and hate speech and misinformation. In addition, the Commission’s request concerns TikTok’s compliance with the protection of minors online.
Meta and Tik-Tok they have until 25 October 2023 to respond to the Commission. Based on the responses, the Commission will assess the next steps. Under the new Digital Services Act (DSA), the Commission can impose fines for inaccurate, incomplete or misleading information in response to its request.
It is noted that a few days ago the Commission had sent a similar request to the “X” platform (formerly Twitter). “We will not let fear and misinformation divide us or undermine our democracy”the Internal Market Commissioner, Thierry Breton, said yesterday from the European Parliament.
