The European Commission will recommend to the Council to launch an excessive deficit procedure in Italy

The Italian Minister of Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti, speaking today to the relevant committees of the Italian Parliament, referred to his country's finances and underlined: “Since the temporary suspension of the Stability and Growth Pact ceased to apply at the end of last year, which was adopted due to the pandemic and maintained due to the energy crisis, based on last year's data, I consider it self-evident that the European Commission will recommend to the Council to activate an excessive deficit procedure for our country and a number of other member countries”. The Italian finance minister added that “the level of Italy's public debt, for obvious reasons of sustainability, requires the greatest possible attention in terms of the resources that can be allocated to each area of public economic policy while there is, at the same time, a clear need to constantly evaluate and monitor the positive effects of each expenditure”.
