The European Parliament has adopted rules for better living dogs and cats and their traceability within the EU

The legislative proposal today approved by the European Parliament with 457 votes in favor, 17 by 86 abstentions, sets EU’s first single standards for the reproduction, housing and traceability of dogs and cats. With nearly 44% of EU citizens having a pet, dog trade and cats have been increasing in recent years, reaching € 1.3 billion a year, according to the Commission. About 60% of owners buy dogs or cats online. In the absence of harmonized minimum standards for the good living of dogs and cats across the EU, the Commission proposed new rules on December 7, 2023.
