Election of a new president
On Tuesday, the European Parliament will elect a new president for the second half of the parliamentary term. The candidates are nominated either by their political group or by a group of 36 MEPs.
The votes can reach four, in the last of which the candidates who have received the most votes in the third round are contested.
The candidate wins by a majority of valid votes.
Priorities of the French Presidency
On Wednesday, MEPs will discuss with President Emanuel Macron the political priorities of the French presidency in the European Council for the next six months.
Major portfolios include the new Digital Services and Digital Market Legislation, the introduction of a carbon tax on imports from countries with lower climate requirements, and minimum wage rules.
On digital services in particular, Parliament will discuss the proposal on Wednesday and vote on it the next day. The legislation aims to create rules for settling illegal online content and to create platforms that will be accountable for their algorithms.

As part of the European Health Union’s promotion, Parliament is expected to adopt an interim agreement with the Council on Wednesday to increase the powers of the European Medicines Agency.
Finally, MEPs will discuss the conclusions of the December summit with Charles Michel on Wednesday, on the EU’s response to the pandemic, rising energy prices and energy security, as well as defense issues.
