The European smartphone market fell 12% in the first quarter of the year, recording the lowest shipments in this period for almost a decade, according to a report by Counterpoint Research, as reported by Reuters.
The decline was the result of continuing component shortages, lockdowns due to a coronavirus pandemic in China, deteriorating economic conditions and the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, the company said.
While Samsung saw shipments fall 16 percent and Apple down 6 percent, Realme was the only top seller to record annual shipments.
“Rising inflation levels across the region are affecting consumer spending, while Samsung and Apple, the first and third largest smartphone sellers in Russia, stopped all shipments to Europe’s largest market in early March 2022,” said Jan Stryjak. , Deputy Director of Counterpoint Research.
The company expects that the annual growth of smartphone shipments in Europe will continue to decline for the next quarters, especially in the second quarter.
