“The European Union is ready to consider further measures against Belarus”

The European Union is ready to consider further measures against it BelarusForeign Ministry spokesman Peter Stano called for the immediate release of Viktar Babarika, who was sentenced to 14 years in prison in Belarus, citing a “politically motivated” trial.

“This sentence is one of at least 125 unfair and arbitrary recent Belarussian court rulings in politically motivated trials, often held behind closed doors and without due process of law,” Stano said.

He also stressed that “the EU calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Viktar Babarika and all political prisoners, journalists and individuals in prison for exercising their fundamental rights.”

“The EU will continue its efforts to hold the Belarusian authorities accountable for the violent repression,” he added.

Finally, the representative of the European Commission points out that “since last October, the EU has gradually imposed restrictive measures in response to the continuing intimidation and violent repression of peaceful protesters, members of the opposition and journalists. “In its approach, the EU is ready to consider further measures.”
