The European Union offers Joe Biden a new transatlantic “founding pact”

Europe has “a friend again” in the White House and invites US President Joe Biden to a meeting with EU leaders to “jointly build a new founding pact” for transatlantic relations, said Wednesday (January 20th) 2021 the presidents of the European institutions. “I would like to solemnly address today, on the day Joe Biden takes office, a call to build together a new founding pact for a stronger Europe, for a stronger United States and for a a better world ”, announced the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. “This new agenda for Europe and for the United States that we want to put on the table is an ambitious agenda, and that is why, on this first day of his mandate, I want to invite President Biden to Europe to participate at an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in Brussels, a meeting which could be held in parallel to a NATO summit, ”he proposed.

Tractations

Charles Michel discussed Tuesday evening with the secretary general of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, the possibility of organizing the European meeting at the same time as the NATO summit in which President Biden will participate. The dates still have to be fixed and will depend on the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic.
