That we badly needed theEurovision Song Contest after the surrender in 2020 due to the pandemic, it is clear both from the audience figures recorded on Rai4 on the occasion of the first of the two semifinals broadcast from Rotterdam – with 2.2% share, it is the most viewed ever – and from dear old people “Freak” without whom Eurovision would not be Eurovision (recover the film with Will Farrell and Rachel McAdams on Netflix to believe). Davina Michelle, a kind of Khaleesi from the Netherlands, attracted the attention of the public; Outer, the North Macedonian artist who lit up the bodice of her shirt as Sailor Moon when she won the Heart Crystal; and especially, Nix, the Norwegian singer who, at the Ahoy Arena, showed up wearing teardrop glasses, white fur and two angel wings which literally overpowered not only him, but the entire performance.
The costume brought him well: in fact, Norway passed the round together with Israel, Russia, Azerbaijan, Malta, Lithuania, Cyprus, Sweden, Belgium and Ukraine.
At Eurovision in 2021, which he chose to move forward by adopting all possible and imaginable safety measures – from the distancing of the public of 3,500 people to the obligation, by all the artists in the competition, to record a contribution of their song to be broadcast in case of positivity of one of the members -, it seems that normality is the word order. After the “freeze” edition of 2020 – the one that prevented a Diodato to participate with that masterpiece that is Make noise – the biggest musical event in Europe starts again con 39 canzoni in representation of as many nations, two semi-finals (the second will be broadcast on Thursday 20 May at 8.30 pm, again on Rai4 (DDT channel 21) with comments by Ema Stokholma and Saverio Raimondo and, in contemporary, on Radio2 and streaming on Raiplay) e the final on Saturday 22 May at 8.30 pm that we will see on Raiuno with the comment of Gabriele Corsi and Cristiano Malgioglio.
Together with the 20 tracks qualified in the two semifinals, in the last act we will also see the “fantastic 6”, that is the 5 founding countries of Eurovision (Italy, France, Germany, United Kingdom and Spain, all qualified by right to the final) and the Host country (in this case the Netherlands). Our hopes, of course, all tighten around the Måneskin, the fresh winners of the Sanremo Festival (the mechanism provides that our country is represented by whoever wins the Festival) who will propose their Shut up and good directly to Ahoy Arena on May 22nd. Italy has not won Eurovision since 1990 – in 2019, with Mahmood, we came very close, given that Money was placed second – and who knows what the Måneskin – currently engaged in the promotion of Theater of Wrath Vol. I, their latest record – do not bring the award (and the event) back to us for 2022. Meanwhile, among the most exciting moments of the first semifinal of the Eurovision Song Contest, we will remember the emotion of the Dutch presenter Chantal Janzen and the homage to maestro Franco Battiato, whose performance with Alice at Eurovision in 1984 has been re-proposed.
